What happens during a running assessment at Bodysmart?

If you’re reading this then you’ve come to the right place! If you have an interest in running analysis but have a few questions first or you’re not sure if it’s for you then please read on. Do let us know if you have any follow-up queries or if you would like to schedule an assessment.

What is a running assessment?

A Bodysmart running assessment has four main components:Shin Splints_Running Assessment2

  1. A detailed discussion with our resident running Physio to establish your goals, current situation and any contributing factors that may need consideration.
  2. Physical screen to test your joint range-of-motion, muscle strength and muscle length as required.
  3. Slow-motion video analysis of your running mechanics which includes instant feedback.
  4. Professional exercise prescription and running advice based on your results during assessment.

The whole aim of the assessment is to assess whether your current training programme and running technique is helping you reach your goals (whatever they may be), and if there are any aspects to your style that can be improved to help you progress.

How will I benefit?

The benefits are many and vary depending on your goals and your current situation. Examples can include; running without pain, learning how to get started with a simple running programme in a safe manner, shaving time off your PB, perfecting your training plan or winning your local ParkRun!

The Bodysmart running assessment is not just limited to serious runners. Runners of any level may benefit. In fact, If you run as part of your sport (netballers, footballers, basketball, hockey players etc.) and even if you’re not a runner but you’ve always wanted to be, then we might be able help.

Our running assessment is competitively priced and might even be great investment in yourself! If you have private health insurance and Physiotherapy is one of your ancillary choices, you could be eligible to claim some of your out-of-pocket expense.

What happens during a running assessment at Bodysmart?

We conduct a subjective assessment which is where you tell the Physio all about your hopes, dreams and even nightmares as related to running. We discuss your goals, history, injuries, current level of activity. We also discuss any specific training programmes you are currently undertaking and can help answer any questions that may arise. We conduct this thorough process as an important part of the analysis which helps ensure we work together to achieve the same desired outcome.

Then an objective assessment will begin with a muculo-skeletal screen of any relevant areas which are highlighted during the initial discussion. This may range from observing posture, testing range of motion of important joints through to muscle strength testing.

The core focus of the running assessment revolves around the analysis on our treadmill, which takes place during exclusive use of our Bodysmart gym. You will be filmed in a series of 60-second periods, from a variety of angles and through different paces. Immediate feedback is provided on the iPad as the Physio explains their findings. You will also be able to see for yourself, with slow-motion video analysis. You will be discuss the parts you do well, and any areas you may find benefit from by adjusting your technique. Easy-to-understand advice is then given regarding technique alterations and a second round of video capture is performed to show evidence of your improvements already being applied!

Aside from their training as a running coach, our Physio is qualified and has the skills to prescribe exercises that will enhance your new and improved running style. As your biomechanics change so too does the distribution of load on different muscles and joints. Our Physio will discuss what exercises you should be doing to support your efforts.

Now you’ve reached the end of the Bodysmart running assessment. You have discussed all your goals and your hurdles, you now know everything about your running style and how to change it for the better, and you’ve got some good ideas about what other exercises you should be doing. But that’s not the end! Because we care about you so much, we want to see you again in about six weeks to help keep you on track. The nature of this catch-up and the type of appointment required can be discussed with the Physio as it’s different for everybody.

Do I need to bring anything?

Yes, here is a list of recommended items to bring (and a few things to have in mind):

  • Running shoes (if you have multiple versions you run in, bring them all!).
  • Clothes you can run in (ideally quite figure-hugging to allow for more accurate observation).
  • If you have been following a training programme then please, bring that with you.
  • If you have Strava or Training Peaks account, please bring your device with you.
  • Have in mind some goals/outcomes or any questions, as well as recognising any barriers such as joint pain or scheduling issues so we can address those directly.
  • Don’t forget to bring your health insurance card to claim your Physio rebate!
